Flash IS the future

Why don't more people see that? Why do so many still continue to develop in an un-maintainable code base, hacked JavaScript, degrading code, and garbage UI? Well Ivan Todorov is trying to do his part to educate why the Flash Platform has so much potential. He has just posted a nice article titled "Macrodobe 8, Microsoft, the future of development, and why Flash programmers have higher IQ". He highlights why the Flash Platform is well positioned for the future and why these are exciting times for any Flash Designer/Developer willing to push themselves to be "well rounded in many disciplines – Object Oriented Programmer, comfort with design patterns, usability, visual design, information architecture, motion, 3d, audio and video media, databases, XML and other dynamic data types, formats and protocols.".

In his post he makes it sound so blatantly obvious where the future is headed and how the Flash Platform can be the vehicle. I only wish more people sitting in the 'decision maker' seat would take a look at the big picture like this and see the potential. Hopefully with the onslaught of new content utilizing the Flash Platform (that is no doubt on the horizon), many eyes will be opened. Until then, it's great to have people like Ivan breaking it down for everyone, his post is a must read for anyone making a career out of using Flash !

I agreed with that. People hacked javascripts to create Rich Internet Application. Then have huge unmaintable codes just to allow cross browser compatibility. Someone should tap on the shoulder on a developer who have not been sleeping for 3 days just to create a simple RIA and pass him a CD with the print ‘Flash MX 2004′

Why do so many still continue to believe the future is in the hands of a single company, albeit IBM, Netscape, Microsoft, Google, or Macromedia+Adobe, instead of decentralized, semantic, human and machine accessible content in open formats? Why don’t more people see that?

I very much equate the hype of an All Flash Web with the hype of 10 years ago that every phone would be a video phone or even more recently that all cars would be replaced with Segways. I believe the Flash Platform to be a “Good Thing” and agree with a lot of what Ivan wrote; but I see Flash as a component of, not the foundation, the web. You can be well rounded in all of the disciplines Ivan listed without betting the future on a single company, not that I hate companies. I like Flash, I like Google, I like Photoshop and all of that. Just don’t put all your eggs in one basket.

Actually I think more people DO see that which is why you have things like MTASC, SE|PY, Zorn, and OpenAMF. The future isn’t so much banking on a company as it is banking on a technology…e.g. Flash. The reason being that no other technology has the POTENTIAL that Flash has. And that’s the key in what Ivan was talking about I believe, “the potential”. And while I agree it would be naive to put all of your eggs in one basket expecting that everyone will go along, I do think that if you are charting a career path for yourself, choosing a “Flash -enabled” path is a smart move if your looking to the future…based on the potential… if the experience layer’ is where you want to be.

So if your considering a career in web design/front end development, it is undeniable that Flash has more upside than anything else out there (when all angles are considered). However if you’re looking to be a back-end programmer/coder obviously you’d want to be more focused in the Java/ColdFusion area with a healthy knowledge of the presentation tier that will be targeted. I think your vision of Flash being a component is correct…the experience component… aggregating and displaying all of the content into a form that is cross platform, cross browser, cross device, all the while maintaining an immersive user experience… that is where Flash will out-perform, out-deliver, and out-hustle any other technology we currently have at our disposal.

    Thanks for your comments :D
