Google Earth — Flash’ed

Okay so this story has been everywhere but I couldn't help but put a small post about it myself. Paul Neave has created Flash Earth... which is just bad ass and deserves to be talked about. Although I doubt I could say it any better than JD himself as he sits atop his soapbox...

The varied JavaScript engines will continue to converge and become more capable, but other engines are simultaneously growing too -- you could go to a downloadable native-code engine like Google Earth or many Microsoft initiatives, or you could use least-common-denominator browser abilities like much of the AJaX work, or you could use a single neutral, portable, easy-to-accommodate engine like the Macromedia Flash Player to abstract away all the differences and provide predictable advanced abilities. Three different approaches: native, LCD, or universal. I think one takes us further....

AMEN TO THAT!!!

[...] Paul Neave has created Flash Earth, an implementation of Google Maps and MSN Virtual Earth in an entirely Flash interface. Lets be honest, both Flash and AJAX are very powerful platforms, and this is a great way of showing that off. It even supports keyboard control, and the zooming and loading is just superb. Enjoy! I know I argued with your last entry, but even before seeing Flash Earth, I agree that Flash can be a far better tool for mapping than any kind of HTML/Javascript, but mainly because it’s vector. SVG if finally beginning to make strides and it may one day contend for the spot, but it’s far from real-world-ready. Maps just work better in Flash.

Well nice experiment but any open interface to implement (Google Maps and GE) something similar to http://www.fuerteventura3D.com
If GE and VE go the right way and provide further flexibilitty they may become the browser of the future at least with georeferenced data.
